When do I have to enroll?

The Initial Enrollment Period is the seven-month period surrounding your 65th birthday:

Initial Enrollment Period (7 months)

  • 3 months before you turn 65
  • The month you turn 65
  • 3 months after you turn 65

Do I have to enroll in Medicare even if I’m not retiring?

Not necessarily. In fact, what you need to do depends on your specific situation:

You have a couple of options:

  1. Keep the employer coverage
    • Enroll in Medicare Part A as soon as you’re eligible.
    • If the employer has more than 20 employees, you may need to enroll in Part B to avoid penalties.
    • Ask the employer if the plan’s prescription drug coverage is as good as a Medicare plan (if not, enroll in Part D to avoid penalties).
    • Compare the total monthly premium and coverage to a Medicare Advantage plan to see which offers a better value (a Quartz Medicare expert can help you with this).
    • When you do retire, you can enroll in Medicare at that time.

  2. Don’t keep the employer coverage and enroll in Medicare
    • Enroll in Original Medicare (Parts A and B) when you are eligible.
    • Decide if you want a Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement plan.
    • If you have prescriptions, sign up for a Part D plan (if you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, it may be included). If you don’t enroll in Part D when you’re first eligible for Medicare, you may incur future penalties.
  • Your marketplace plan will end when you turn 65 so you’ll need to enroll in Medicare.
  • While you’ll lose any tax credits or savings you currently receive, a Medicare Advantage plan could save you a lot of money.

What are the different types of Medicare plans?

Part A

  • Covers hospital stays.
  • Issued by federal government.
  • No monthly premium.
  • You might have to pay a deductible.

Part B

  • Covers doctor visits and urgent care visits.
  • Issued by federal government.
  • Monthly premium, based on income, usually deducted from Social Security check.
  • You may still have to pay for some services, including a deductible.
Part C (Medicare Advantage)
  • Covers everything Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does plus additional coverage and benefits.
  • Some plans include prescription drug coverage.
  • Issued by private health insurance companies, like Quartz, once you’ve enrolled in Original Medicare.
  • May have to pay a monthly premium.
  • Deductibles and out-of-pocket costs differ by plan.

Part D

  • Covers prescription drug coverage
  • Sometimes included in Medicare Advantage plans or can be stand-alone plan
  • Issued by private health insurance companies, like Quartz, once you’ve enrolled in Original Medicare.
  • Monthly premium
  • Copays can vary by plan and prescription
Medicare Supplement Plans
  • Covers the same benefits as Original Medicare.
  • Covers the 20% of covered costs not covered by Original Medicare, plus the Part A deductible.
  • Doesn’t include prescription drug coverage.
  • Issued by private health insurance companies, like Quartz, once you’ve enrolled in Original Medicare.
  • Monthly premium, in addition to Part B premium.
  • Typically doesn’t cover the same level of additional benefits offered by a Medicare Advantage plan.

Here are some answers to common Medicare questions:

To answer that question, we first need to explain the different types, or parts of Medicare

Original Medicare (Parts A and B)

Part A

  • Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care and hospice care.
  • There’s no monthly premium for most people, but you may have to pay a deductible.
  • Provided through the federal government.

Part B

  • Covers doctor visits, urgent care, home health services and more.
  • There is a monthly premium, usually deducted from your Social Security check.
  • Provided through the federal government.
  • Original Medicare does NOT include prescription drug coverage. Part B covers a limited number of outpatient prescription drugs under certain conditions.
  • Offers everything Original Medicare does, plus more.
  • Prescription drug coverage is included in many Medicare Advantage plans.
  • Offered by private health insurance companies such as Quartz.
  • Quartz has Medicare Advantage plans that give you all the coverage you’re used to, plus so much more — with monthly premiums as low as $0 per month!
  • Focus exclusively on prescription drug coverage and cover many commonly used brand-name and generic drugs.
  • Offered by private health insurance companies such as Quartz.
  • These may be included in Medicare Advantage plans or available as stand-alone plans.
  • Also called Medigap plans because they help cover the costs, or “gaps,” that Original Medicare does not.
  • Cover the same things as Original Medicare (Parts A and B).
  • Offered by private health insurance companies, like Quartz.
  • Do not include prescription drug coverage.

Here are a few factors to consider when comparing Medicare plans:

  • Expected expenses
Do you have a medical condition that requires extensive care and/or lab work? Wear eyeglasses or hearing aids? Expect a hospital stay?

  • Monthly premiums
What is more important to you: low monthly premiums or lower total out-of-pocket costs?

  • Prescription drugs
Do you take prescription drugs, or do you expect to need them in the near future?

  • Dental and vision coverage
Do you wear glasses or have vision concerns? Do you anticipate dental care beyond preventive cleaning?

  • Travel plans
Do you plan on traveling in the U.S.? Outside of the U.S.?

  • Original Medicare (Parts A and B) and Medicare Supplement plans are accepted by any doctor in the U.S. that accepts Medicare.
  • Coverage for Medicare Advantage plans depends on the type of plan and the Medicare insurance provider.
  • Because you’re already a Quartz member, you can switch to a Quartz Medicare Advantage (HMO) plan with confidence, knowing your doctors and hospitals will continue to accept your plan.
  • You have two months, beginning when your current employer coverage ends, to enroll in a Medicare Advantage (Part C) or Prescription Drug (Part D) plan without paying a penalty.
  • If the employer has less than 20 employees, you may need to enroll in Part B to avoid penalties.
  • If you’re only enrolling in Original Medicare (Parts A and B), you have eight months.
