Since 1968 the United States has recognized the important contributions the Hispanic and Latinx communities bring to this country. Hispanic Heritage Month, known as “El Mes de la Herencia Hispana” in Spanish, is celebrated from September 15 to October 15. This month-long celebration recognizes the cultures and heritage of more than 58 million Latinx living in the U.S., accounting for 18 percent of the U.S. population1, positively shaping the face of America.

Quartz values the importance of the Latinx community and the communities we serve. In light of Hispanic Heritage Month, we are also pleased to celebrate a very important milestone that has impacted the health outcomes of the Latinx community, the Nuestra Salud radio program.

The Nuestra Salud radio program (Translated: “Our Health”) is a collaborative effort of Quartz, UW Health and the Latino Health Council of Dane County, Wisconsin. The radio program has been an invaluable tool for doing outreach and community education on health care and health insurance within the Latinx community for the past 15 years.

The Nuestra Salud radio program is a great example of community collaboration, an initiative organized and created by immigrants for immigrants. We invite you to celebrate with us by watching the video: Nuestra Salud, 15 years of community collaboration — supporting the health of the Latinx community.

Celebrations like Hispanic Heritage Month remind us of the diverse roots this country nurtures and its unique makeup. It is during this time that we pay tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched both our nation and our society.

Interesting Fact

Five Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua celebrate their independence on September 15. Mexico, Chile and Belize also celebrate independence days within the Hispanic Heritage Month time-frame and Columbus Day (Día de la Raza) is October 1.
