Updates to claims software system

At Quartz, we strive to keep you informed about changes that may affect your practice. Effective May 1, 2024, the following update will occur in our claims edit software system.

Multiple surgery modifiers for practitioners

Quartz will activate this edit to ensure proper coding and billing associated with multiple surgeries. Claims submitted for professional services for reporting multiple surgeries should follow Medicare guidelines. Codes with a multiple surgery indicator of 2 or 3 in the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) should report the highest RVU procedure without modifier 51. Additional surgical procedures performed by the same provider on the same day should be reported with modifier 51. For further details, please refer to the Medicare Claims Processing Manual and the CMS RVU files.

We will enforce this edit for all lines of business. Services previously reimbursed may no longer receive payment when the multiple surgery modifier is appended incorrectly.
