When do I have to enroll?
The Initial Enrollment Period is the seven-month period surrounding your 65th birthday:
Initial Enrollment Period (7 months)
- 3 months before you turn 65
- The month you turn 65
- 3 months after you turn 65
Do I have to enroll in Medicare even if I’m not retiring?
If you’re working past 65 (or plan to stay on someone else’s employer plan)
You have a couple of options:
- Keep the employer coverage
- Enroll in Medicare Part A as soon as you’re eligible.
- If the employer has more than 20 employees, you may need to enroll in Part B to avoid penalties.
- Ask the employer if the plan’s prescription drug coverage is as good as a Medicare plan (if not, enroll in Part D to avoid penalties).
- Compare the total monthly premium and coverage to a Medicare Advantage plan to see which offers a better value (a Quartz Medicare expert can help you with this).
- When you do retire, you can enroll in Medicare at that time.
- Don’t keep the employer coverage and enroll in Medicare
- Enroll in Original Medicare (Parts A and B) when you are eligible.
- Decide if you want a Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement plan.
- If you have prescriptions, sign up for a Part D plan (if you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, it may be included). If you don’t enroll in Part D when you’re first eligible for Medicare, you may incur future penalties.
If your current health insurance plan was purchased through the marketplace
- Your marketplace plan will end when you turn 65 so you’ll need to enroll in Medicare.
- While you’ll lose any tax credits or savings you currently receive, a Medicare Advantage plan could save you a lot of money.

Here are some answers to common Medicare questions:
What type of Medicare is right for me?
Original Medicare (Parts A and B)
Part A
- Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care and hospice care.
- There’s no monthly premium for most people, but you may have to pay a deductible.
- Provided through the federal government.
Part B
- Covers doctor visits, urgent care, home health services and more.
- There is a monthly premium, usually deducted from your Social Security check.
- Provided through the federal government.
- Original Medicare does NOT include prescription drug coverage. Part B covers a limited number of outpatient prescription drugs under certain conditions.
Medicare Advantage plans (Part C)
- Offers everything Original Medicare does, plus more.
- Prescription drug coverage is included in many Medicare Advantage plans.
- Offered by private health insurance companies such as Quartz.
- Quartz has Medicare Advantage plans that give you all the coverage you’re used to, plus so much more — with monthly premiums as low as $0 per month!
Prescription Drug plans (Part D)
- Focus exclusively on prescription drug coverage and cover many commonly used brand-name and generic drugs.
- Offered by private health insurance companies such as Quartz.
- These may be included in Medicare Advantage plans or available as stand-alone plans.
Medicare Supplement plans
- Also called Medigap plans because they help cover the costs, or “gaps,” that Original Medicare does not.
- Cover the same things as Original Medicare (Parts A and B).
- Offered by private health insurance companies, like Quartz.
- Do not include prescription drug coverage.
What will my total out-of-pocket costs be?
Here are a few factors to consider when comparing Medicare plans:
Expected expenses
Do you have a medical condition that requires extensive care and/or lab work? Wear eyeglasses or hearing aids? Expect a hospital stay?Monthly premiums
What is more important to you: low monthly premiums or lower total out-of-pocket costs?Prescription drugs
Do you take prescription drugs, or do you expect to need them in the near future?Dental and vision coverage
Do you wear glasses or have vision concerns? Do you anticipate dental care beyond preventive cleaning?Travel plans
Do you plan on traveling in the U.S.? Outside of the U.S.?
Will I need to switch doctors?
- Original Medicare (Parts A and B) and Medicare Supplement plans are accepted by any doctor in the U.S. that accepts Medicare.
- Coverage for Medicare Advantage plans depends on the type of plan and the Medicare insurance provider.
- Because you’re already a Quartz member, you can switch to a Quartz Medicare Advantage (HMO) plan with confidence, knowing your doctors and hospitals will continue to accept your plan.
When can I enroll?
- You have two months, beginning when your current employer coverage ends, to enroll in a Medicare Advantage (Part C) or Prescription Drug (Part D) plan without paying a penalty.
- If the employer has less than 20 employees, you may need to enroll in Part B to avoid penalties.
- If you’re only enrolling in Original Medicare (Parts A and B), you have eight months.
How do I enroll?
To enroll in Original Medicare (Parts A and B):There are two ways to find out if you’re already automatically enrolled or need to enroll:
- Call Social Security at
(800) 772-1213 | TTY: (800) 325-0778
Mon. – Fri., 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. - Visit SocialSecurity.gov
