“We may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we all belong to one human race.” — Kofi Annan, 2001 Nobel Peace Prize
Diversity benefits us all. It drives innovation and creativity. Also, encouraging learning from different perspectives leads to better problem-solving skills. Diversity has given us amazing discoveries. Here are some examples:
- African Americans
- Refrigerated Trucks. Invented by Frederick McKinley Jones in 1940.
- The Three-Light Traffic Light. Invented by Garrett Morgan in 1923.
- Asian Americans
- Universal Serial Bus (USB). Invented by Ajay Bhatt in the 1990s.
- Functional Cure for HIV-Positive Infants. Katherine Luzuriaga, M.D. in 2014.
- Hispanic/Latinx
- Color TV. Invented by Guillermo Gonzalez Camarena in 1940.
- Wireless Phone. Invented by Roberto Landell de Moura in 1895.
- Native Americans
- Syringes or Hypodermic Needles. In pre-Columbian times, South American Indians used sharpened hollow bird bones attached to small bladders to inject medicine.
- Baby Bottles and Formula. Using similar technology, the Seneca used washed, dried, and oiled bear intestines with a bird quill attached as a nipple. Mothers filled them with a mixture of pounded nuts, meat, and water.
One final thought, when we embrace diversity, we are stronger. When we listen and learn from each other, we open our minds to a world of infinite possibilities. It is up to us to enhance our communities and workplaces with creativity and innovation to make the world a better place. Visit our DE&I page to read more about our initiatives and resources.
