For many, April marks the beginning of Spring, but it also marks a very important health observance in the United States — Minority Health Month. It’s a month to raise awareness on issues impacting health disparities and health equity in our country.
The U.S. population, including minorities, is more than 300 million people!1 Communities of color play a very important role within that data, changing the nation’s demographic profile on economic and social implications.
We encourage recognition of the contributions diverse communities bring to our neighborhoods and how we can all work together to promote health by providing resources and opportunities.
Great Initiatives Throughout the Year
Physical and mental wellness activities promote health and reduce the risk of chronic diseases and other conditions that are most common among certain racial and ethnic minority groups.
Throughout the month of April, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health2 offers an Active and Healthy Challenge to promote physical activities you can do with your family, friends and neighbors. The challenge runs through April 30, so there’s still time to put together a team!
