Burn Center – A Regional Resource Delivering Critical Care

When you hear the word “burn,” do you think “fire”? That’s a natural link, but there are many other types of burns and they all should be treated by a specialized team that cares for burns every day, not someone who sees these types of injuries occasionally. Thermal, chemical and electrical burns, plus frostbite and hypothermia are just some of the conditions expertly treated at the UW Health Burn Center in Madison, Wisconsin. Its services include –

  • Complete burn care from the time of injury through rehabilitation
  • Supportive occupational therapists, physical therapists, dieticians, pharmacists, social workers, health psychologists, respiratory therapists, phlebotomists, radiology specialists and psychiatrists
  • A collaboration with the UW Health Level I Trauma Center that makes available a team of trauma care specialists 24/7/365, plus additional patient resources
  • Physicians who are also researchers, looking for ways to improve treatment and healing for burn patients

Fast fact: UW Health’s University Hospital is the only hospital in Wisconsin and one of only 12 in the U.S. to carry all three of these distinctions: 1) an American Burn Association-verified adult and pediatric Burn Center, 2) an ACS-verified Level I Trauma Center for adults and 3) an ACS-verified Level I Trauma Center for pediatrics.
