For people looking to buy their own health insurance policies in Wisconsin, the best time to buy is during Open Enrollment. Open Enrollment is the time that anyone can buy, change or renew their individual or family policies. For 2018, Open Enrollment is November 1, 2017 through December 15, 2017.
HOW DO I MAKE SURE MY INSURANCE STARTS ON JANUARY 1, 2018?
You can sign up as early as November 1 (premiums won’t be due until insurance coverage starts). The last possible time to sign up for coverage starting on January 1, 2018 is December 15, 2017. If you sign up on December 16, your insurance won’t start until February 1. So it’s best to sign up early – it doesn’t cost you more and you won’t have to scramble to get the coverage you want.
WHAT IF I ENROLL ON A WEEKEND OR HOLIDAY?
If you enroll online, your enrollment will be recorded on the day you sign up. Many people think this is the easiest and best way to enroll. Even if you click “submit” at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on the 15th of the month, you can expect to have your insurance start on the first of the next month.
However, if you think it’s best to enroll is by phone, make sure the insurance company is open when you plan to call. Many insurance companies are closed in the evenings, on weekends and on holidays. If you plan to call on the 15th and that date is a holiday, Saturday, or Sunday, you may not be able to enroll for insurance starting the next month.
WHAT IF I JUST MOVED AND MY OLD INSURANCE DOESN’T COVER MY NEW AREA?
You’ll need to buy a new plan. The good news is that you don’t have to wait for the next Open Enrollment period. Life changes such as moving, getting married, childbirth or adoption qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). Be sure that you enroll within the timeline for your SEP.
