WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT SELF EMPLOYMENT HEALTH INSURANCE

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) means that almost everyone has to have insurance, even if you’re self-employed. In fact, if you don’t have health insurance, you may have to pay a fee.

How is self-employed defined for health insurance?

If you are self-employed with no employees, you can buy health insurance like any other individual. Even if you hire independent contractors to do some work, you’re probably still considered to be self-employed for health insurance purposes.

Unity can help you find the health insurance plan that is right for you. We offer great customer service and are ready and waiting to help you now.

I have a long-term health problem and I’m self-employed.  I’ve been denied health insurance in the past. Can this still happen?

No.  Health insurance companies can't refuse to cover you or charge you more just because you have a pre-existing condition. They also can’t charge women more than men.

Insurance companies can't turn you down or charge you more because of your pre-existing health or medical condition like asthma, back pain, diabetes or cancer. Once you have insurance, they can't refuse to cover treatment for your pre-existing condition.

This is true even if you’ve been turned down or refused coverage due to a pre-existing condition in the past.

Unity invites all self-employment health insurance applicants to explore our plans. Benefits can include health coaching and health management programs for diabetes, hypertension and more.
