Distracted Driving Awareness Month & Stats
April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month
Each day in the United States, at least eight people are killed and 1,161 injured in car crashes that involve a distracted driver.
In 2014, 3,179 people were killed and 431,000 were injured in car crashes involving distracted drivers. The National Safety Council observes April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month to draw attention to this issue.
Types of distractions that go beyond texting
Texting is considered one of the worst distractions to drivers, because it requires a person’s full attention (visual, manual and cognitive). However, other distractions that could endanger the driver’s, passengers’ and even bystanders’ safety are –
- Eating and drinking
- Talking
- Combing your hair or putting on makeup
- Using a navigation system
- Adjusting the radio
